Signs of the Times

When we are finally able to get back to the office, we’re going to have a lot to remember. Wear your mask, wash your hands, keep your distance, don’t touch that orange! (Actually, that orange is probably going away). Adapting to a new normal in our old work environments is going to take some getting used to. As part of O+A’s ongoing effort to develop design strategies for the post-pandemic workplace the graphic artists at our Brand Studio have created helpful, friendly reminders of all the stuff we will need to keep in mind as we’re coming back to work. These posters are a small part of a much deeper dive into the changing work environment, the results of which we will soon unveil in a detailed guide. O+A is blessed to have graphic designers with strong individual aesthetics. We asked Elizabeth Vereker, Paulina McFarland, Chelsea Hedrick, Sarah Hotchin and Minnee Pham to do their own versions of the prompts and warnings that will inevitably be part of our working lives until this crisis is behind us. If it’s the duty of all artists to turn crisis into something that lifts the spirit, we think our poster artists have done that here. Each poster is formatted 8.5 x 11 for easy printing and wheat pasting around your office—or your home. And yes, we understand that may be the same thing right now. We’re rolling these out one designer at a time.

“If a snake can go their whole life without hugging, we can go a few months. Wear your mask, social distance, and find ways to leave joy and beauty in your wake.”

“In this difficult time we all are facing, I am looking for all things positive. I made these posters with this in mind. I am forever inspired by color and the combination of shapes, angles, curves and type and the way they can communicate a message to people. This is my way to convey in a serious message in a fun and joyful way!”

“I’ve been inspired lately by San Francisco music posters from the 60’s in all their psychedelic glory, hence the mad colors of this series. I’m also enjoying how shapes and color convey meaning without showing much of anything pictorial, and how our brains fill in the gaps with a story, since we are inherently wired to seek meaning. I intended for the set to be joyful and uplifting, to create a tapestry of feel good design with a message that (even though serious) is infused with positive vibes for the viewer.”

“These designs are a contemporary take on safety posters that incorporates bold type and color paired with minimal shapes to convey clear and important messages about Covid-19 in a relatable way.”

“When I was designing these posters I wanted the message to be serious, but also helpful and optimistic. We are living through a dark period, but we are colorful and resourceful and we are learning to be brave. We know we can rock this off!”
