Supernal DC

Supernal LLC, Hyundai Motor Group’s (HMG) Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) company wanted its policy and commercial hub in Washington, D.C. to be “Better than Home”. Supernal started with a small group in 2020 without any offices where they could meet or collaborate in person due to the pandemic shutdown.

Supernal’s vision is to develop a new transportation ecosystem that will define how we move, connect and live with democratized mobility alternatives for a more sustainable future. Studio O+A’s design team in partnership with FOX Architects wanted to create a forward-thinking work environment based on Supernal’s revolutionary goals. An overarching design concept, “Wisdom of Swarm” inspired by flight and collective intelligence found in nature and a new set of customized space typologies were developed.

Opening the Doors to Innovation

The first floor lobby and Innovation Center offers a welcoming experience with digital educational stations, air mobility models, meeting space, and a dynamic interconnecting staircase to bring the journey to the upper floors.

The Innovation Center informs students and policymakers alike about Supernal’s vision of developing a new transportation ecosystem that will define how we move, connect and live with democratized mobility alternatives for a more sustainable future.

Education Takes Flight

The Power of a Staircase

The new opening for the staircase was planned at the west side of the building to bridge the exterior landscape with the new interior landscape while also providing sunlight access. The stadium seats were designed to be used as gathering points for the Innovation Center.
By the staircase at Supernal lobby at the DC office employees are greeted by a 3-dimensional typography installation behind the interconnecting stair that speaks to Supernal’s purpose “Reimagining Mobility.” Although the installation is static the sequential rotation of the letters makes it appear as if it is in motion like a flock of birds.

Threshold of Discovery

On the second floor one is greeted by the “Foyer” and “Ideation Room,” which can be accessed by the invited guests and employees.

A Stage for Collaboration

The second floor offers various enclosed meeting room types, such as the “Courtyard” (flexible/ re-configurable multi-purpose rooms), “Central Square” (open collaboration space), living room-esque “Homeroom” with multiple configurations to adapt various functions, interview rooms and phone rooms.

Harmony in Motion

Line graphics can be seen painted on the floor acting as area rugs in the Eco-Café and Central Square and on columns in the open office on the 3rd floor. These line graphics are inspired by the repeated and unique notes in a bird song as well as the patterns created when birds fly in unison and suddenly change direction.

Active Stairs

The second staircase between Level 2 and Level 3 is an interconnecting stair around the social hubs to encourage interactions between employees and to convey the cultural transparency of the company.

The stadium seats were designed to provide an equitable experience with various postures offered. Their multi-purpose uses include: open collaboration as teams, casual conversations during the day and at lunch, a quiet moment to enjoy the view, all-hands meeting and so much more.

Navigation Deck

A space for mentorship, guidance, and connection, the Navigation Deck is where leadership can connect with team members in a variety of settings.

Bringing the Outdoors Inside

The indoor “Arboretum” is one of the most popular typologies where people find tranquil moments away from intense workdays.

Signage and Wayfinding

Studio O+A also developed the corporate signage & wayfinding systems for Supernal that was implemented at the DC office as well as three other Supernal locations to date. Inspiration for the signage comes from Supernal’s chevron symbol, air vehicle design, strength of the whole found in nature, and the future-forward Supernal ecosystem of tomorrow.

Paths of Travel

The main circulation path around the core of the building was articulated with a painted “track” line to encourage employees to take a walking meeting or just to get up and move throughout the day. Meandering thinner lines extend from the track to highlight key destinations around each floor.
